Cotswold Airshow 2011 – aka Kemble
Father’s Day was happily spent with my dad at the Kemble airshow. A spectacle of roaring engines and sultry acrobatics. One day I will be up there with them taking the photos, but for now I had my feet firmly planted on the ground with the lens pointed up. I wanted to keep away from the classic shots of the plane filling the frame against the sky. This way you can great details of the plane but I wanted to put things into perspective. The planes were flying low and the crowds were in awe. We had the last ever UK public display by the DC3 and the 60th anniversary of the Hawker Hunter. So I hope you enjoy them!

It was a bit unnerving at one point when I was shooting down the fence line. I really thought one was going to come up and tell me off for photographing them. I would have thought they would have understood why I was changing the ‘focus’ away from the planes because when the planes were not flying past the people were my subject matter! Thanks for looking.

I agree with Ian, the shot with the man’s head in it – cap and sunglasses – was very creative and added so much more to the shot. Great work! Keep them coming!

Great shots! I love that you pulled out and showed off those dramatic clouds, and that you included enough of the crowd to let us feel like we were there. Really, really cool.

Great pictures! When my husband was in college he was in an aerobatic team that flew super decathalons. Air shows are quite amazing! Thanks for sharing and congratulations on being Freshly Pressed.

The photos remind me of when I used to go to Oshkosh: always something in the air begging to be photographed. Thanks for posting a great set of images and a very good story. If I can ask, why is this the last time a DC-3 will fly in the UK? Those old birds were built rugged, the engines can still be rebuilt, so what gives? If it is the last flight, it’s a sad thing indeed, and I can understand the guy hanging his head.

The last DC3 that was owned in the UK has now been sold to private buyer in the USA so we now have no more in the UK. Sad I know. It was it’s last public display. I’m not fully clued up about the whole story with the DC3, but I think they are now mostly in the USA so it will be a while till the UK get another display. Thanks for your comment 🙂

In that case, I’d like to apologize for whatever American it was who bought this plane and took it out of England. Enough brave young English men both flew and jumped out of those planes that it’s as much a part of your heritage as ours. Hopefully someday another one will come to England so children can both know the story and see the reality of them.

I spent many hours sitting in DC3s waiting to jump into combat. One was at Arnhem and had a plaque to prove it! This was in 1979. It has got to be one of the most successful aircraft ever built. Sad to see it go… they had character!

Thanks, I chose the coloured smoke photo because it was unusual to be able to capture the scale of the Red Arrows against the sky and their symbolic smoke patterns. Thanks for looking.

This is great! I love how you noticed the other photographers and people at the event, not just the planes – i.e. the “focus” of the event. The last shot in this post is really exquisite photojournalism.

Congratulations on being freshly pressed, great photos.
I love the photo of the guy hanging his head. I felt like that when Concord was retired and there was so much difficulty in finding the funds to get the Avro Vulcan back into flying order. Someday, these beautiful old machines won’t work any more. 😦

I like the Hawker Hunters flying into the cloud formations–mostly because of the amazing clouds! I love clouds. They’re awesome. But the picture wouldn’t be so interesting without the planes.

No – They have a dedicated smoke generator which can dispense one of the three colours when required. Thanks for looking.

Great photography, but I’m very upset about the last DC3. Those aircraft deserve just as much hornage as the hurricanes and spits, I can remember them limping home all shot up. Later I worked on them in Trinidad, and flew in them in the oil industry. They were the most famous aircraft in the world, and the safest, probably too. and the last one in England should have been highly cherished. Oh their Pratt and Whitney Engines, what a roar of 14 cylinder sound.
